Olof Philipsson and Pär Thunberg presented their collaborative diploma project Cooperative Design Process, from Urban Strategy to Design Detail at the KTH School of Architecture. The presentations gave rise to very interesting discussions on their strategy, methods and results. The jury was all in favor of this type of collaborative work, in this case between an architect and an engineer. All in all, a very good presentation, and rigorous work from both students.

Presenting at Architectural Machines symposium, AA

Posted by on February 24, 2009

Co-ordinated by Marie-Ange Brayer (FRAC Center Orleans) and Claudia Pasquero (AA INTER10/ecoLogicStudio), this symposium was inspired by the YOUNIVERSE exhibition curated by M-A Brayer in Seville for the BIACS3 and by research work done in the AA by various undergraduate units and postgraduate programs. I presented the work of Krets, in which I put focus to the fact that the concepts explored in the symposium are as valid during collaborative project development as in the final proposal.

The final panel was moderated by Brett Steele, director of AA.

“The relationship between architecture and science has been evolving throughout history mainly reflecting the ever-changing relationship between society and nature. The last century was shaken by a sudden jump in human’s understanding of his surrounding environment: from an intuitive/philosophical/mathematical understating of complexity and the turbulent dynamic of natural processes we moved into a measurable, material one; supported by our ever-increasing computational power we can now feel, measure, read and visualize complexity; this condition has allowed a direct material engagement with dynamic processes to escape the restricted field of science and permeate society at many levels. In architecture the effect is becoming evident and, most of all, nuanced: from purely metaphorical and figurative the new relationship between architecture and science is emerging as material and, ultimately, prototypical.

Moreover the ‘material’ of architecture has radically expanded its meaning, incorporating aspects that are virtual, potential, dynamic, and informational: we can now perhaps define this expansion as the most noticeable and important effect of computation in architecture and design. The symposium should present this emerging diverse palette of ‘material’ approaches indicating strands of research that are redefining both the relationship between science and architecture and between architecture and the architect itself.”

Accepting position as Director of Research and Development

Posted by on February 9, 2009

I have accepted the role of Director of Research and Development at Scheiwiller Svensson Architects. I will still be directing the ssark medialab, which makes my current 20% position at the office entirely devoted to issues of development. This work is very relevant to my PhD research project, and especially our trials with a DocuWiki system as a platform fro collaborative development work will be a very important case in my thesis work. The work includes the coordination of six different development fields, including the ssark medialab.

GC workshop at the KTH School of Industrial Engineering and Management

GC workshop at the KTH School of Industrial Engineering and Management

The third event of this week was a full day GC introduction, open to students and your practitioners. The event was supported by KTH School of Industriel Engineering and Management, Bentley Systems, the SmartGeometry Group and Scheiwiller Svensson Architects. Main  tutors Lars Hesselgren (KPF Director of Research) and myself, with assistance by Mania Agahei, Petter Forsberg, Raimo Joss, Alexander Trimboli and Thomas Tong (AADIP16/KPF).

Seminar on Architecture and Technology at ssark, 5/2 2009

Lars Hesselgren at the ssark medialab seminar

As the second event of this week, Lars Hesselgren, research director at KPF Associates, presented at a seminar hosted by ssark medialab. This was part of a series of seminars on Architecture and Technology I am arranging as the director of the ssark medialab, with invited guests from many Stockholm offices. My hope is here to establish an informed critical discussion of digital design processes within practice.

We also had presentations from local architects. Raimo Joss from White presented Stockholm Waterfront, where a parametric thinking was implemented in the project development. Olof Philipsson and Pär Thunberg presented their diploma thesis, where an office building is acting as a case through early phase collaborations between architects and engineers are explored. Benjamin Melin Mandre and Björn Ekelundpresented a cross disciplinary research project developing alternate designs for power lines, using tensigrity structures.

As the first session of three arranged by ssark medialab, Lars Hesselgren, the research director of KPF Associates presented work developed with GenerativeComponents to Swedish clients and contractors. I concluded the presentation by introducing the ongoing work to implement parametric principles at Scheiwiller Svensson Architects.
