Ulrika's wonderful introduction that set the standards of the feast

On June 8th 2012 I defended my doctoral thesis, and passing the procedure, I received a doctorate of Archtiecture. The end of a journey starting in 2005, it was a challenge, a moment of great joy, and a time of despair. Looking back, I have to express my gratitude most strongly to many. My family; my mother Else, my sisters Anna and Camilla, my brother Hans, their spouses Colin, Martti and Lotta, my nieces and nephews Mathilda, Emma, Max and Jonathan (the photographers), and Amelie, my love, and her parents Bo and Suzanne, and sister Ebba with Pete. All for making this event something that joined professional passions with the most personal issues.

For making the endeavor possible: my professor Örjan, advisor Katja, opponent Mette, chairman Tina, and review board Lars-Henrik, Thomas and Marcus. For the celebration again my family, Amelie, Bo (in charge of the barbecue), Suzanne, Anna-Lisa, Birgitta, and Erik, and collegues Desireé. Erika, Nina, Hamia, Milad and Sander.

For speeches far beyond my expectations; Anna, Örjan, Nina, Bo, Daniel, Marja, Elsa, Ulrika. For making it possible to celebrate in a marvelous spot, Karin and the White Stockholm office. End friends travelling from far; Kjell and Emilia.

For coordinating, providing the atmosphere, and making git all possible; Ulrika, and again Amelie! While the thesis itself exposes little of the joy and sadness of this day, it can be read here. And for absent loved ones; my father and his partner; Svante and Ulla-Britt, sincerely missed and never forgotten.

Dsearch [White], design development for Forumtorget

Parametric system and resulting formal variation

Parametric system and resulting formal variation

The continued design work for Forumtorget involves the development of a parametric system (using Grasshopper) that allows the exact definition of each part of the 0 meter long sofa with the immediate delivery of production documentation for each of the 1500 + lamellas needed for the complete production. The parametric model was developed to allow a non-specialist (with no expertise in parametric modeling) to continue to refine the overall form.

Dsearch was part of the White competition team for Forumtorget, resulting in a competition win for a new vision for this public square in Uppsala, Sweden. A main feature of the design concept was a close to 70 meter long sofa, a public furniture installation that includes a continuously varying section that provides the possibility to facilitate infinite numbers of seating configurations. The proposal also included an integrated lighting solution, and was based on a parametric design approach, for future design development. Read more on the project here.

Lecture at the Form/Design Center in Malmö, by invitation of the White Malmö office, presenting the digital design field to archtiectural practitioners. The lecture was one in a series of lectures organized of local architectural firms, and the aim was to suggest the dual potantial of new technilogy as part of architectural design, in terms of strategic potatential as well as speculative medium.

Half the group in progress

The first of three workshop days that will introduce digital design strategies and parametric thinking to Associates of White & Partners was facilitated in March in the Stockholm office. 25 participants from six different White offices took part, and will through the spring try out a number of digital tools while developing small design proposals within teams. The projects will explore parametric design thinking, analytical techniques and fabrication. The workshop is organized by Dsearch in collaboration with White R&D Building technology (Kunskapsbygget Byggteknik), with financial support from the ARQ Research Foundation.

We were very happy to have Michael Speaks as a guest at White Arkitekter, in a lunch conversation organized by Dsearch in collaboration with White R&D. The theme was research and design in practice, and Speaks made the interesting statement that universities start to behave like companies, and large companies start to look at knowledge in a similar way as universities. He suggested that there is an urgent need to re-educate experienced architects, and that this can be accomplished by a more innovative mode of practice in addition to classical training. As a concluding remark, he stated that the only remaining value of vanguard architects is the vanguards of practice, the architects that reform the mode of practice itself.

Michael Speaks in the seminar with students from Perfromative Design and Architectures of Interdisciplinarity

As a collaboration between KTH Performative Design studio, we were happy to have Michael Speaks as a guest. The Dean of University of Kentucky, Speaks is previously known for introducing design intelligence as a source of innovation in practice, as well as introducing Dutch architecture to a wider international audience in the 1990s. He gave a public evening lecture at the KTH, and held a seminar with our two studios on the topic of design and research in teaching and practice. The events were organized by myself in collaboration with Daniel Norell of the Performative Design studio.

We were fortunate to receive additional funding from the KTH School of Architecture for this event.

Dsearch [White], design concept for Koggens gränd, Malmö

Gradually shifting pattern developed in Grasshopper

Gradually shifting pattern developed in Grasshopper

Koggens gränd is one of Sweden´s first large scale, owner occupied apartment buildings, developed by White arkitekter through in-house management. At a very late stage, Dsearch was asked to develop a pattern to be applied on pre-cast concrete elements at the ground level of the building. The parametric principle allowed for a gradually shifting pattern, that would provide unique formal qualities by each individual entrance. Due to construction restraints the proposal was never completed, but the concept is presented in a comprehensive way in the doctoral thesis, where the particular prinicples for specialist / non-specialist collaboration devised in the project are explained.

In the second project of studio 11 in the fall 2010 our students were asked to deploy the techniques for digital design as well as structural and environmental analysis in the design of a visitors´centre for the Högdalen Energy from Waste power plant. This involved a basic understanding of the programmatic requirements of the facility and the added functions, as well as the development of a design strategy for industrial sites. This assignment also introduced the theme of the year, as the spring will see the design of new Energy from Waste facilities in three different sites around Stockholm.

Beside all tutors of the studio; Hanif Kara, Paul Scott, Reuben Brambleby, Lina Martinsson Achi and myself, we also had our assisting tutors Alexander Trimboli and Raimo Joss, and invited guests Helena Jarlöv Glantz and Sander Schuur in for the review. A great ending of the first intense semester of the new studio.

The first internal event organized by Dsearch in November 2010 was a collaboration with the White R&D Building Technology network. Facilitated in the Stockholm office, this event presented the initial aganda of the Dsearch development team, as well as provided a background to the current state of digital design strategies in practice. Special guests included Pablo Miranda and Åsmund Gamlesater from Aedas R&D, and Gustav Fagerström from UN Studio.
